THE PRICE OF PASSIONATE LIVING
While wages struggle against the windmills of inflation, utility bills in Bulgaria have turned into a true "VIP subscription." We checked how many Euros an average family has to shell out just to avoid staying in the dark, cold, and thirsty.
The "Golden" Tap: Where is water more expensive than champagne? If you live in Northeast Bulgaria, you probably feel like you're showering with French mineral water. In cities like Silistra and Razgrad, the price per cubic meter has already hit the psychological barrier of €3.30. For a family of four, this means that a long soak in the bathtub is now in the "extravagant expense" category. In Sofia, we still "breathe" easier at around €1.60 - €1.80 per cubic meter, but for how long?
⚡ Electricity – The New Currency With the transition to the free market for household consumers, the electricity bill has turned into a lottery that nobody wins. During winter, if you rely on air conditioners, prepare between €120 and €180. The night tariff of €0.09/kWh has become the housewife's best friend—doing the laundry after 11:00 PM is no longer a chore, but a survival strategy!
Winter is Coming, and with it, the "Greetings" from District Heating Heating remains the urban dweller's biggest nightmare. Even though international gas prices have settled around €34/MWh, final bills for December and January often make consumers turn pale. For a two-room apartment in the capital, the "pleasure" of having warm radiators and hot water costs between €100 and €150 monthly. And if we add the mysterious "building installation" fee—the sum becomes straight-up cinematic.
The War for the Entrance: The "Golden" Elevator Don’t underestimate the fine print! Entrance maintenance fees have soared. It’s no longer strange to pay €15 - €20 per person just for the elevator to work and the cleaner to pass by once a week. In new gated complexes, the amounts are even saltier—there, the "peace of mind fee" can cost you over €50 per month.
THE "SURVIVOR'S" NOTEBOOK (Monthly Report in Euro):
Coffee and News (Internet + TV): €20 (to know why you're poor).
Light at the end of the tunnel (Electricity): €45 (summer) / €150 (winter).
Cleanliness (Water): €25 (if you don't overdo the shower gel).
Thermal Therapy (Heating): €80 (winter average).
The Bottom Line? To maintain a decent standard in a 65 sq.m. apartment, you must set aside between €200 and €400 just for "utilities." In a country where the minimum wage barely chases Central European levels, the phrase "my home is my castle" sounds more and more like "my home is my biggest expense."
