Speed control on Bulgarian roads becomes stricter with the introduction of new toll system options.

In the fight against dangerous road accidents, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Bulgaria is introducing new speed control measures. According to the analyzes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, excessive speed is one of the main causes of accidents with serious consequences. This global problem has even garnered the support of the United Nations (UN), which has set itself the goal of reducing speeding vehicles by 50% by 2030.

The key part of the new measures is the introduction of cameras on the toll system, which will not only monitor the violations of drivers without paid vignettes, but also issue speeding fines. This process, however, will begin to be implemented after the adoption of changes to the Road Traffic Act (Road Traffic Act) and the certification of devices to perform this function, which may take several months.

Special software has been developed to monitor and control the exceeded average speed on the roads. The data provided by the software is currently being certified. The speed control will be carried out in the control center of BG TOL, and the scope includes 50 mobile and 295 stationary cameras, covering the whole country 24 hours a day.

Under the proposed plans, fines for drivers caught speeding will come into force within 4 months. The toll camera control system provides four photos as evidence in the event of a violation.

The project was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and the Bulgarian Institute of Metrology (BIM). The aim of the initiative is to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents by accurately measuring the average speed and imposing penalties by the traffic police.

The Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Andrey Tsekov noted the importance of the new measures, stressing that the system has already been tested with success and is ready to be introduced as soon as the parliament defines the definition of "average speed" and made legislative changes to the Law on Traffic the roads. Speed control is expected to improve overall road safety and reduce the risk of serious accidents.
